About Us

Trombé Ltd. provides a custom design, manufacture and installation service for complete glazed structures. We are renowned for our expertise in ‘frameless’ glazing and its integration with aluminium and steel construction, but we work with a wide range of construction materials and components.

Our aim is to find an appropriate and individual solution to every project. We also frequently work in conjunction with other architectural practices who appreciate our specialist know-how and attention to detail. We have an in-house team of architects, and we prepare a full set of co-ordination drawings for each installation. We believe this sets us apart from other companies in the field.

Projects range from a roof light to multi-storey structures, may be integrated into larger projects, may be extensions to an existing building or free-standing. We have worked on Grade I listed monuments, country estates, modern townhouses and conversion apartments – but we are known for our contemporary, architectural approach and meticulous service.

Although Trombé employs architects we are not a traditional architectural practice; we offer a specialist design service to enable full integration of our glazing elements with the construction and ensure a tailor-made solution to suit the client’s needs. We do not provide a ‘design-only’ service.

We manufacture and install all the components that make up the glazed structure including steel framework, glass and finishing cladding and trims, but we do not carry out general building work. On most projects this is carried out by a local building contractor. Trombé can assist in selecting a suitable builder or work with a main contractor, or project manager.

We have well-tried liaison and information flow systems in place to ensure full co-ordination so that our contracts run smoothly, however the project is managed.

Trombé Ltd.  can advise on the structural alterations that may be necessary to integrate a new extension with the existing space, and the implications for the structure and integrity of historic buildings, and we can co-ordinate with planning authorities to supply the necessary design and technical information for discharge of planning conditions. We are au fait with the Building Regulations and their implications for the design of glazing.

Following the design stage, we will co-ordinate carefully with the contractor and our skilled site operatives execute the installation to the highest standard.  To give a very general idea of timescale, a typical project will take 6-12 months from start to finish, although we will do all we can to incorporate your requirements, subject to the limitations of our current design and manufacturing schedule.

Our office is based in London, but we can handle residential and commercial projects throughout the UK, and further afield.

Our History

Alan West established Trombé Ltd 1990 to provide a completely individual approach to the architecture of glass and although we have grown and changed since then, our aim remains the same. In the early days, we specialized in timber frame construction. Although this is a traditional technique, the company quickly developed a reputation for a contemporary interpretation of the conservatory structure.

In 2005 Trombé embarks on the first steel frame and structural glazing projects. At this point we are the only company offering this type of construction to the homeowner, and we soon become renowned for our expertise in ‘frameless’ glazing and its integration with aluminium and steel construction.

Andrew Sale joined the company in 2012 and is now our Technical Director and Lead Architect.

Our achievements have been recognized by awards including The Northern Design Awards, Don’t Move Improve! (nomination), the Eisteddfod Award of Merit and the Design Et Al Awards, and our work has featured widely in the design press including Grand Designs Magazine, House & Gardens, AJ Small Projects, Living Etc, the Sunday Times property supplement.

Our Process

In the first instance, please contact us by phone or by email, so that we can provide initial guidance on design options and likely costs.

If appropriate, we will arrange a meeting with a designer, either on site or at our offices, and we will subsequently provide design, specification and cost proposals.

Alternatively we can work in conjunction with your architect, building contractor or other consultants.

We have the resources to deal with planning permission or other statutory consents, in order to facilitate.

The construction process itself involves carefully pre-planning, during which we will consider every detail in consultation with yourself, and will liaise with all parties to ensure effective co-ordination throughout the project.

Budget

Cost will vary according to many factors including design and specification, size, site conditions and location.

At the outset of a project, we provide budget cost guidance to help you assess feasibility, and subsequently we will provide further detailed cost information as the design is developed.

Please do not hesitate to contact our office if you would like to find out more about typical costs or would like to discuss a project in more detail.
