Clapham Hill House

Clapham Hill House

Our clients needed more space as asked us assist with the reconstruction and enlargement of a dilapidated extension to the rear of their Victorian home in the Clapham Conservation Area to create a generous, contemporary kitchen/dining room.

Planning policies placed restrictions on the design, and in particular the low roof pitch of the original lean-to extension had to be retained. We used this constraint as a springboard for an innovative design which divides the new structure into two zones, contrasting the use of glazed and solid construction. The existing patent glazed roof was replaced with structural glazing supported by low-iron glass beams falling to a structural box gutter, which also serves the new glazed ‘glass box’ and canopy to create a ‘butterfly’ roof structure.

The structural design involves long spans and consequently a substantial steel frame, which is insulated and clad externally in dark grey colour coated aluminium. This solid, structural element contrasts with the use of lightweight glazed elements in which a range of techniques are employed including glass to glass junctions, glass beams and a glazed canopy resting on bespoke steel brackets. Unusual details including a custom made stainless steel threshold grille have been included to enhance the architectural quality of the structure.
