Curved Glass Extension

This glazed extension formed part of a major refurbishment to improve the relationship between the house and its beautiful and extensive garden and wider landscape setting.

Having lived in Far East the client wanted the design to reflect a Samurai soldier’s helmet, viewed in relation to the roof form of the original building. Trombe fulfilled this brief by creating a glazed pavilion with a curved plan and a zinc clad flat roof incorporating shaped roof glazing integrated with a large facetted bay window to the master bedroom at first floor level.

We then worked with the structural engineer, roofing specialist and garden contractor to design the detail of the construction, and subsequently manufactured and installed the structural frame and the roof glazing in co-ordination with the main contractor. We pushed the technology to the current limits in order to achieve the largest curved double glazing units available.

Due to the dark material palette and the form of the extension and the existing roof above the project was also nicknamed Darth Vader’s Mask.
