Islington Square Extension

Islington Square Extension

Although this five story, listed, terraced town house located in a garden square in Islington had a substantial floor area and elegantly proportioned rooms, the kitchen was very small and located in a 1970s rear extension. The objective was to create a much larger kitchen/dining room extension, with additional accommodation at basement level.

The solution was deceptively simple; The extension was re-built with the addition of a taller, infill ‘glass box’. Laminated ‘walk-on’ glazing at garden level allows daylight to enter the basement room below.

Conceptually, the glazed structure is virtually invisible; the architectural detail of the original rear elevation is clearly seen through the glass and the structure is tall enough to enclose an existing window. Exceptionally clear ‘low iron’ glass is used to enhance the sense of transparency.

As the building is listed, minimal intervention to the original architecture was possible. Nevertheless, the design ensures that the property benefits from a spacious kitchen without compromising the light received by the existing rooms.
