Stockwell House

The owner of a new build townhouse in Stockwell wanted to extend into an existing light well to create a larger family kitchen/dining/living area. The house comprised 2 storeys plus a basement and although the light well was essential for ventilation and daylight, it received very little sunlight and was unused and unloved. We created a simple flat roof extension, retaining a small area of the lightwell accessed by sliding doors. The roof incorporates a walk-on section with balustrades to link the living room to the garden at ground floor level. We replaced the existing window with new French doors to facilitate this access.

Although the architectural design is quite simple the process of dimensional co-ordination, and the various issues regarding servicing the kitchen according to the requirements of the Building Regulations, was technically demanding. The end result is a spacious, light filled and cheerful room forming the heart of a busy family home.
