Walk On Glass Extension

The owners of a listed Georgian town house in Islington asked us to design and build an extension to create a garden room and enable access from the main rooms on the upper ground floor to the garden.

A minimal glass structure was added at lower ground floor level, extending across the entire width of the house to infill between the existing structures on each side. Laminated ‘walk-on’ glazing at roof level enables access to the garden via a custom-made hardwood stairway. An elegantly detailed, independent steel structure creates architectural definition and frames the minimal triple sliding doors.

We obtained Planning and Listed Building Consent, on the basis that the architectural detail of the original rear elevation is clearly seen through the glass. Exceptionally clear ‘low iron’ glass is used to enhance the transparency of the glazing, and although the height of the structure is low to correspond with existing storey heights, the internal space does not feel constrained.
