Walled Garden House

An extension to a listed Grade II* building in a historic Suffolk village, a timber frame house which dates in part from the early 15th Century.

Trombe designed a kitchen extension incorporating a ‘frameless’ glazed envelope supported externally by a green oak frame, giving the impression of a pergola, relating to the existing layout of the garden. Large, minimal frame, sliding doors open onto the garden. The design is contemporary yet in harmony with the historic setting.

We worked with the local Conservation Officer and Historic England, to reach an acceptable solution for this sensitive site. This project demonstrates that a modern extension to a listed building is possible with careful siting and detailing.

The scheme was highly commended in the inaugural Listed and Modern Architectural Awards, and was featured in The Times Bricks and Mortar supplement.
